Shellbark Hickory

Fruit: Elliptical to nearly round, 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 inches in size and sunken at the apex of the husk.  Husk is 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and orange to chestnut-brown in color when mature.  The nut is 4- to 6-ribbed, and the seed is sweet.  Shellbark hickory is also known as 'Kingnut hickory' because it has the largest nut of all the hickories.
